Flags for Freedom Opening Ceremony

The city of Merriam has planned several events in connection with the Fourth of July holiday and the Flags for Freedom display. More than 3,000 flags will fly from Sunday, June 26, through July 5 in downtown Shawnee and Merriam. The following free events are planned at Merriam Marketplace pavilion, 5740 Merriam Drive: • Opening ceremony featuring the Merriam Fire Department and Bugles Across America, 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 25. • Music at the Marketplace featuring ragtime piano by John Sankey, 10 a.m. Saturday, June 25. • Free concert featuring the Blue and Gray Brass Brigade, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, July 1. Attendees should bring their own chairs. • Music at the Marketplace featuring the Barbershop Quartet, 10 a.m. Saturday, July 2. • Celebration of the Flags, a patriotic program and concert featuring the Shawnee Concert Band, 12:30-2:30 p.m. Monday, July 4. Join Americans across the nation in singing the National Anthem at 2 p.m. To purchase a dedication ribbon for Shawnee’s display, call LaRue Smith at (913) 268-5393. Dedication ribbons can be purchased for $1 by buying a flag for $25. Flags for Freedom sponsorship forms are available at Shawnee City Hall, 11110 Johnson Drive.
