Tonganoxie Community Band summer concert

The Tonganoxie Community Band will have its 11th annual summer concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday at VFW Park.  The band has 43 members this year with members from the Tonganoxie, McLouth and Leavenworth areas. The concert this season is titled “Triumphant Spirit,” which is the title of the opening number for the concert by James Swearingen. “All of the music chosen for our concert this year has its own sound and I believe will make a positive impact on our audience,” said Charles Van Middlesworth, band director. This year’s concert will feature Disney classics such as “Fantasia 2000” and “I Just Can’t Wait to be King” from “The Lion King.” A medley of music called “Soundtrack Superhits” features “Eye of the Tiger” and “Arthur’s Theme.” Another selection, “As Summer was Just Beginning,” was written about actor James Dean. Patriotic music such as “America the Beautiful” and “Salute to America’s Finest” will be performed. The band will honor men and woman serving in the Armed Forces by playing each Armed Forces Hymn and recognizing audience members who have served. The band will close its concert with a medley from “Mamma Mia.” Guests are asked to bring a lawn chair and enjoy hot dogs and hamburgers available for purchase. All proceeds will be used to support the Tonganoxie High School band program.
