Bobcats open season with victories

April 5, 2001

Basehor-Linwood pitcher Courtney Reed fired a pair of gems last Thursday as the Lady Bobcats defeated the Bonner Springs Bravettes, 6-1, and 5-0, at the Basehor Field of Dreams.

Reed, one of the area's premier pitchers, struck out 24 batters in the double-header, allowing 10 hits, one run, while walking only five batters.

"Courtney knows a lot of the team's success will be on her shoulders," said BLHS head coach Susan Mayberry.

Christina McCarty of Basehor-Linwood receives congratulations from first base coach Brenda DeGroot after an RBI single during Thursday's 5-0 win over Bonner Springs.

"I was just pitching the ball," Reed said of her performance.

"I didn't expect anything really."

The pair of wins gets a young Basehor-Linwood squad that lost five starters off to a 2-0 start.

"I have to be pleased with two wins," Mayberry said. "There are still lots of things we need to work on."

"I think we were ready," Reed said of the Bobcat squad. "We had some new girls and I think they were a little nervous, but after the first pitch, I think they were OK."

Bravettes head coach Ann Decker said she was disappointed with the losses, but was pleased with some efforts.

"We see what we've got to do to win," she said. "Vanessa (Spartan) had some good hits for us."

Spartan provided three of the nine hits for Bonner Springs (0-2).

Game 1

The Lady Bobcats used a four-run fourth inning to pull away from Bonner Springs in the opener.

With the score tied at 1-1, Kelleigh Gorup and Cristin Burnett provided RBI singles, while Jackie Horn added a two-run singles to build a 5-1 margin.

Stephanie Larson led off the inning with a single, then was replaced by courtesy runner Megan Laffoon. After a sacrifice bunt moving Laffoon to second, three consecutive singles by Gorup, Christina McCarty and Burnett followed.

Laffoon scored on Gorup's hit and courtesy runner Lesley Hancock came in to score on Burnett's single. Horn smashed a single to score Burnett and Kara Lackner.

BLHS jumped off to a 1-0 first inning lead when Kara Lackner walked and moved to second on a wild pitch. She moved to third on Emily Hoffman's single and scored when Stephanie Larson looped a fly to left.

The Bravettes tied the score in the fourth inning when Miki Mellott scored on Holly Miller's infield hit.

Basehor-Linwood's final run came in the fifth, when Larson doubled and pinch runner Laffoon scored on a single by Gorup.

Shannon Davidson went the distance on the mound for the Bravettes, striking out three batters and allowing 10 hits, four walks and a pair of hit batters.

Reed kept the Bravette batters off stride throughout the game as she struck out 15, including a string of seven straight.

Game 2

In the nightcap, Reed again dominated the Bravettes, allowing only two hits.

Holly Thompson broke the hitting dry spell for the Bravettes in the fourth inning when she cracked a single and was stranded at second base. Forshey and Spartan added singles for the Bravettes.

The Lady Bobcats got on the board in the second inning when Larson singled and Terra Nichols came in as a courtesy runner. Nichols came around to score on a single by McCarty.

BLHS put the game out of reach with three runs in the third. Gorup walked and raced around the bases to score on a triple by McCarty. The junior first baseman laced a ball just down the rightfield line, which travelled all the way to the corner.

"I knew that I had two strikes on me and I had to pull through for everybody," McCarty said of the hit. "It was a very big surprise to me to get the triple."

Burnett followed with a single to send McCarty home. Later in the inning, Horn hit a two-out clutch single to send Burnett across the plate.

The final run came in the sixth inning when Larson singled and scored on Gorup's single.

Reed had another dominating performance, allowing only three hits and one walk while striking out nine Bravette batters.

Kristi Holt went the distance on the mound for Bonner Springs and pitched well in her varsity debut, allowing only eight hits while walking three and striking out six.
