Bobcats ready for practice with pads after beginning season at 12:01 a.m

With three practices under his belt, Basehor-Linwood High School quarterback Nick Verbenec said he was ready to get into pads. Because of Kansas state rules, the Bobcats were not allowed to practice in pads until Thursday, Aug. 16, and Verbenec said that has been driving some of the guys crazy.
Athletes of the Year

Every year at Basehor-Linwood High School, the varsity coaches get together and discuss which students they will vote for as the school’s athletes of the year. This year, however, there wasn’t much discussion. Travis Fouts and Jackie Horn were selected as the male and female athletes of the year, respectively, and BLHS athletic director Joe Keeler said they were both easy choices.

County Commission approves 9-mill tax increase

Despite facing public opposition, the Leavenworth County Commission unanimously approved a nine-mill increase for the 2002 budget. According to the budget figures, the total expenditures for the 2002 budget will be an estimated $38,125,738, up from the $32,623,956 spent in 2001.

City Council approves tax increase

The Basehor City Council approved a mill increase Monday, Aug. 13, that will raise the mill levy for the city by more than 12 mills. The City Council faced public opposition to the increase, although council members sighted shortfalls in revenues as the reason behind the increase.
