Bonner Springs falls in close contest with Ottawa

The Bonner Springs Braves were unable to overcome a combination of poor free throw shooting and a first period cold spell in a 60-57 Huron League loss to Ottawa on Tuesday.

The loss dropped Bonner's record to 9-6 coming into Friday's game at Atchison.

Bonner Springs managed to hit only 1-of-9 field goals in the first period as Ottawa sprinted out to a 9-2 lead.

Darryl Anderson got the Braves back in the game in the second period hitting seven straight points including a basket off a good feed from Alfonzo Cole.

In addition, Cole had a hot hand, canning seven points in the period which ended with the Braves trailing 30-22.

Cole continued his hot shooting in the third period scoring 10 points, six coming on pull-up jumpers off the fast break. Anderson got a tip down at the 3:02 mark to tie the game at 39-39. A short jumper by Michael Cook moved the Braves into a 44-44 tie going into the fourth period.

Ottawa opened the fourth period with a 6-2 run to move to a 50-46 lead. Twice the Braves came within one point in the final minutes, but could never forge a tie.

With 16 seconds left Anderson cut the lead to 58-57, however Ottawa's Cale Drumright had two clutch free throws with 13 seconds left to ice the win.

Throughout the game, Bonner was plagued at the foul line, hitting only 8-of-15. Ottawa was 20-of-32.

Anderson and Cole led the scoring with 19 points each. For the first time in his career, Sean Birdsong failed to score. He had four personal fouls and a technical and did not play the second half.

Bonner Springs 52, Bishop Ward 47

Clutch free throws by Michael Cook and a spectacular steal and slam dunk by Darryl Anderson sealed the victory as Bonner Springs posted a 62-57 Huron over Bishop Ward at KCKCC on Friday.

The last second heroics capped a tight, tense game that saw eight ties and seven lead changes.

Bonner scrambled to a six-point lead with 2:28 left in the period, however the Cyclones battled back a 6-1 run to slice the margin to one, 58-57 with 20 seconds left.

Cook was fouled as the Braves attempted to move across the time line. The sophomore calmly drained two free throws with 11.1 seconds showing for a 60-57 lead.

Ward attempted a desperation pass when Anderson stepped into the passing lane, grabbed the ball and roared down the floor for a dramatic two-hand slam just ahead of the buzzer giving the Braves their third league win.

Bonner Springs struggled in the early going and trailed at halftime, 33-30. They finally took the lead with 2:06 left in the third period when Sean Birdsong had an outstanding assist to Tom Gardner for a short jumper and a 42-40 lead.

Bonner hit 20-of-47 from the field for 42 percent. The Braves stayed in the game in the first half at the free throw line, hitting 14-of-20, overcoming a cold 8-of-25 field shooting. Ward was 22-of-55 for the game netting 40 percent.

Anderson led the Braves with 22 points and 18 rebounds.

Braves Notes...

Fans are reminded that the boys and girls varsity games against Tonganoxie have been moved to Wednesday, Feb. 21. They were originally scheduled for December but were postponed due to inclement weather. They were set for Monday, Feb. 19, but were moved again at Tonganoxie's request.
