"(Seaman) played a very tough defense," Baker added . "It was the toughest defense we've seen all year."

The Bravettes were plagued with turnovers. The Seaman defense forced Bonner Springs into a season-high 29 turnovers in the game.

Bonner Springs hit only 9-of-37 (24 percent) from the field, while Seaman was 18-of-45.

Thursday's recap

Bonner Springs 44, Washington 42

Morgan McConico's layup with 16.2 seconds remaining propelled the Bonner Springs Bravettes to a 44-42 win over Washington in the Class 5A Sub-State semifinals at Topeka Seaman on Thursday.

Even after McConico's drive inside the lane for the basket, the game wasn't over for Braves fans as they held their breath as a three-point attempt at the buzzer bounced off the rim.

Coach Garold Baker said that the winning basket didn't come on a set play.

"She (McConico) went on her own," Baker said. "We wanted her to go to her left and she saw the opening. I'm glad she went when she did because I was just about to call timeout."

Bonner Springs controlled the first half and much of the third quarter, but Washington refused to go away.

The Bravettes jumped out to a 10-4 first quarter lead and moved to a 25-18 intermission mark. Lindsey Stanbrough nailed a short jumper and seconds later hit two free throws to give the Bravettes an 11-point lead, 35-24, with 3:52 left in the third quarter.

Washington answered with an 11-4 lead to cut the margin to 38-36 at the end of the third.

Berry hit a short jumper in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter, but Bonner Springs allowed Washington to take the lead, 42-40, with 1:45 remaining. Berry then tied the score at 42 with a follow shot with 1:26 remaining.

Washington had a key turnover and gave the Bravettes possession which set the stage for McConico's last second heroics.

"It's nice to get the monkey off our backs," added Baker, who earned his first Sub-State coaching win at Bonner Springs.

The Bravettes hit 18-of-43 from the field for 42 percent while Washington was 18-of-49 for 36 percent. Both teams struggled at the free throw line where Bonner Springs managed only 4-of-11 while Washington was 3-of-9.

Berry led the scoring for Bonner Springs with 11 points.
