BLHS football lands eight on KVL team
After glancing at the Kaw Valley League's all-league picks, it made sense that the Bobcats had one of the most feared rushing attacks in the KVL this season.
BLHS landed three vital parts of its running game on all-KVL first teams and two others received other honors on Thursday, Nov. 1.
Linemen Justin Ishmael and Dan Renfro made up two-fifths of the first team offensive line and fullback Joey Barlow was picked as one of the first team backs and receivers.
Ishmael earned the first team spot this season for the first time in his high school career.
"It's a real big honor because it signifies that you're one of the best at your position in the league," Ishmael said.
For Renfro, it marked the second straight season that he was picked to the first team offensive line and he said making a repeat appearance was quite an honor.
"It's great because people watch your progress over the years and to be back on there is definitely nice," Renfro said.
Renfro was also picked for the first team defensive line. Barlow was also picked on defense, given honorable mention among defensive backs and linebackers.
Joining the trio of first teamers on the offensive side of the ball were quarterback Nick Verbenec, linemen Zack Pike and Matt Gillette and tailback Matt Dukes. Dukes, Gillette and Pike were given honorable mention for their play, with Dukes and Gillette also earning honorable mention honors for defense.
Verbenec earned a spot on the second team of backs and receivers and he was also the highest vote-getter among the league's quarterbacks.
Junior Jake Brown was the only Bobcat selected to the first or second team defense. He was selected to the first team for defensive backs and linebackers.
The Bobcats' 12 selections ranked fourth among KVL teams.
