Courtney kicks off first season with tryouts
The Basehor-Linwood High School boys basketball team kicked off its season on Monday, Nov. 12, with three days of tryouts.
First-year varsity coach Bruce Courtney said overall the tryouts were a success and he added that the most difficult part was trying to watch so many different players.
"Tryouts are different because you want to see everybody do everything and make sure you don't miss anything," Courtney said. "You always wish you had more time, but you do the best with what you can.
This year, about 38 boys tried out for spots on one of the three boys teams - varsity, junior varsity and freshman.
One player who saw varsity action last season, junior Brandon Dye, said he was impressed by the group trying out this year.
"We have a lot of good shooters this year and a lot of guys who are pretty good," Dye said.
The first two days Courtney ran the players through fundamental drills and then on the final day he had them scrimmage so he could see them in a game-type situation.
Final cuts were made on Wednesday and practice begins on Thursday, Nov. 15.
