Services for Helen Schilling, 91, Tonganoxie, were Oct. 2, at the First Congregational Church, Tonganoxie. Private inurnment followed.
Mrs. Schilling died Friday, Sept. 28, at Providence Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan.
Helen was born May 3, 1910, in Baker, Kan., the daughter of Martin and Sophia Schilling. She retired in 1975 as traffic manager for KC White Goods, Kansas City, Kan., and worked as a feature writer and columnist for the Tonganoxie Mirror newspaper after retirement. She served in the U.S. Coast Guard during WW II as a Spar in Boston, Mass. She was a 75-year member of the First Congregational Church and spent more than 70 years as a member of the Rinda Chapter No. 82 Order of the Eastern Star, both of Tonganoxie. Helen was a past commander of Kansas City, Mo. Women's Post No. 465 and was a member of Conboy Nichols American Legion Post No. 340, Sugar Creek, Mo. She was a charter member of both the KC Women's traffic club, Kansas City, Mo. and the Tonganoxie Historical Society. For many years she served as a travelers aid volunteer in Kansas City, Mo.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Grace Schilling; and one brother, Edward Schilling.
Survivors include numerous cousins.
The family suggests memorials to the Tonganoxie VFW Post No. 9271 Building Fund or to the church.
