Basehor library moves forward with plans
It may appear there hasn't been much progress made on plans for a new Basehor Community Library building.
However, plans are under way as library officials continue to assess needs for the proposed new facility, said Carla Kaiser, Basehor Community Library director.
"There are things happening even though you may not be able to see it," Kaiser said.
In April, library officials signed a contract to relocate the library near the Prairie Gardens housing development on 158th Street.
The new facility will reside on three acres, north of Holy-field Wine and Vineyard and west of townhouses being built in Prairie Gardens.
Basehor residents Ray and Anne Breuer donated the land for the new library facility.
To fund the new facility, Basehor voters will have to approve a bond issue.
An election date for the bond issue has not been determined.
In April, library officials thought the bond issue could be put to voters in November. However, Kaiser said a November election date is now unlikely.
"I don't think that's enough time for us to get everything we need," she said.
Also yet to be determined is how much the new facility will cost. Kaiser said library officials are trying to determine how much square footage the new building will entail and until that's complete, a price estimate cannot be figured.
"We have to determine if we're going to have a meeting room and how many people it will hold and where we're going to put computers and how much materials we'll have," Kaiser said. "Those are the kinds of decisions that we're making that will determine how much square footage we'll need."
Previous rough estimates indicated the new library would entail 15,000 square feet. The current library is approximately 4,000 square feet.
To help library officials determine what kind of new facility they want, Kaiser said the library would form a committee of community group members.
The committee will consist of five to 10 library patrons, she said.
"(They'll help) us get a feeling for what the new library should contain," Kaiser said.
