A look at the first round of the Bobcat Invitational hoops tournament

The semifinals of the 2002 Bobcat Invitational Basketball Tournament are scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 17, but before we move forward, here's a look at how each of the teams advanced through the first round of the tournament.

Boys Bracket:

Pembroke Hill 41,

Blue Valley West 38

Despite being held scoreless in the first quarter, Pembroke Hill came back from a two-point halftime deficit to beat Blue Valley West 41-38 in the first round of the Bobcat Invitational.

While Pembroke Hill had trouble putting the ball in the basket in the first, the Jaguars of Blue Valley West were not much more successful. At the end of one, the Jags led by just four points, 4-0.

In the second half, the teams returned to normal scoring, but Pembroke Hill outscored the Jaguars 30-25 to earn the three-point victory.

Michael Taylor led Pembroke Hill in scoring with 11 points and David Smith added 10. Marcus Frye chipped in seven in the win.

For Blue Valley West, Kyle Mason led the way with 15 points and Matt Kleinmann added 11.

Pembroke Hill will now face Fort Scott in the semifinals on Thursday at 4:30 p.m

St. Joseph Benton 39

St. Joseph Central 67,

Platte County 34

St. Joseph Central jumped out to a 21-6 first quarter and never looked back.

At halftime, the lead was extended to 22 points and at the end of three quarters SJC led by 32, before winning, 67-34.

T.J. Spire-Sweet and Travis Spire-Sweet led the scoring for St. Joseph with 16 points a piece. Travis Fogge led Platte County with seven.

St. Joseph Central will now face Mill Valley in the semifinals at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17.

Girls Bracket:

Bonner Springs 32,

Ft. Scott 47

Ft. Scott overpowered an outmanned Bonner Springs team in the second girls game of the event.

Andrea Dill had nine first-half points and the Bravettes remained close, trailing, 30-29 at halftime.

From there, however, Bonner Springs hit only two field goals in the third quarter and the Bravettes fell behind by nine at the end of three.

Fort Scott outscored the Bravettes 15-9 in the fourth quarter to reach the deciding margin, 47-32.

Overall, Bonner Springs shot 33 percent from the floor and committed 17 turnovers in the loss. Dill led the Bravettes in scoring with 11 points.

Blue Valley West 52

St. Teresa's Academy 77,

Mill Valley 31

The top seed in the Bobcat Invitational had no trouble advancing the semifinals on the girls side of the bracket, as St. Teresa's Academy pounded winless Mill Valley 77-31 on Tuesday, Jan. 15.

The eighth-seeded Jaguars hung around with the top seed for a while, but in the second quarter St. Teresa's unleashed a decisive, pressure-oriented run that buried that Jaguars. Kara Hoschouer led the scoring for Mill Valley with eight points, while Erica Yancey led the way for St. Teresa's with 18.

The win improved STA's record to 10-3 and moved them into the second round. With the loss, Mill Valley fell to 0-10.

St. Teresa's will face St. Joseph Benton at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, in one semifinal. St. Joseph Benton advanced to the second round by knocking off host team Basehor-Linwood 62-31 in the first round.
