Meals on Wheels dishes out to senior citizens
For $1.50, homebound Basehor residents can have lunch delivered to their homes through the Leavenworth County Council on Aging and the Hickory Villa senior center.
The Meals on Wheels program is sponsored by the Council on Aging and the meals are delivered to the senior center at 15426 Hickory Street in Basehor.
Hickory Villa resident Judy Rodina, who coordinates the Meals on Wheels program, said the service is valuable to elderly residents who are not able to leave their homes.
"I feel like it's doing a service to people that can't get out and those with a limited income can't cook a meal for a $1.50," Rodina said.
Seven homebound Basehor residents currently have meals delivered to them daily.
The meals are prepared at the Broadway Heights nursing home in Leavenworth and sent to Hickory Villa, where Rodina and others deliver them to elderly Basehor residents.
The meals are also offered at the senior center, where Hickory Villa residents or others can dine in.
Rodina said 10 to 20 meals are prepared every day. She said other Basehor residents, not just senior citizens, can also eat at the senior center as long as they call ahead of time.
"Anyone in Basehor or Leavenworth County can as long as they call first, ahead of time so we know how many meals to prepare," she said.
The Meals on Wheels program has been offered in the city and Leavenworth County since 1983.
Leavenworth County Council on Aging nutrition coordinator Julie Angello said the program will continue to be available to those that need meals delivered to their homes.
"We have no intentions of closing it by any means," she said.
Rodina said the program is available to anyone who qualifies. Those qualifications include a resident being 60 years of age and unable to leave home.
Meals are available Monday through Friday.
