Library gears up for annual book sale

October 9, 2002

In a dusty, dimly-lit backroom of the Basehor Community Library, boxes of donated books line shelves and crowd a narrow walkway.

And that's just part of the selection of books that will be available during a library book sale beginning Thursday, Oct. 10, and lasting through Sunday, Oct. 13.

"We have never had so many books before," said Lila White, president of the Friends of the Basehor Community Library organization. "We still have more at a (storage facility)."

Library officials said they were hesitant to estimate how many books would be available, but there are at least several thousand, White said.

The book sale will begin with a Friends of the Library pre-sale from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10.

Book prices range from $1 to $3 for paperbacks, and $1 to $5 for used and new hard covers. Videos and magazines will also be for sale, library officials said.

The sale will take place at the Basehor-Linwood Education Service Center, 155th Street and Leavenworth Road.

The book sale schedule is:

9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11

9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12

The sale will conclude Sunday, Oct. 13, with a "Fill a bag for a $1 day."

Hosting the sale at the school is a departure from past years but is necessary because there will be so many books available, White said.

"We'll have a lot more room for people to browse easier," she said. "This thing keeps getting bigger and bigger every year."

The Friends of the Library is sponsoring the book sale, now entering its 15th year, and will use the funds garnered from the sale to support children and teen-age reading programs.

"The majority really goes into the children's programs," White said. "The Friends group solely supports the youth programs."
