BLHS blanked by Mill Valley in season opener
The Basehor-Linwood High School soccer team suffered an 8-0 shutout loss at the hands of Mill Valley to open the 2002 season.
Despite the lopsided loss, BLHS coach Ken Couch was encouraged by what he saw, particularly in the second half.
"In the second half, we played a lot better," Couch said. "It actually looked like we had some direction. We played a little more kick-ball than I would've liked, but sometimes that's what happens."
The Bobcats trailed 7-0 at the half and managed to hold the Jaguars to one goal in the second half.
BLHS senior Charles Millison started in net for the Bobcats, but was put at midfield after allowing three goals.
Zach Lowe replaced Millison and finished the half, before giving way to Joel Vandervelde in the second half.
"Both Zach and Joel made good showings," Couch said. "Especially for a team that shot at us like Mill Valley did."
Millison got a red card and was ejected from the game late in the second half for arguing about one of the Mill Valley goals.
The ball bounced off the cross bar and fell straight down. The referees said it crossed the goal line, but Millison thought otherwise.
Millison's red card forced the Bobcats to finish with 10 players. He will also have to sit out their next game, Thursday, Sept. 5, against Tonganoxie.
Game time for that game is 5:30 p.m.
