Vandals damage new golf course

September 4, 2002

Vandals riding all-terrain vehicles damaged a new golf course in Basehor during the weekend.

Falcon Lakes Golf Course crews were able to fix six greens without Labor Day play being affected, course officials said.

Police believe two people riding ATVs drove on six back-nine greens, causing approximately $7,000 in damage to the course, located at 4605 Clubhouse Dr., just off of Kansas Highway 7.

The incident probably occurred late Sunday night or early Monday morning.

"They got into the bunkers, too, but that didn't cause much damage," said Officer Dick Boultinghouse.

No suspects have been arrested.

A greenskeeper found the damage early Monday morning. Ground crews were able to repair the greens before golfers got to the back nine, said Steve Jablonowski, vice president of Falcon Golf Management.

"We were able to get ahead to where it wouldn't affect play," he said.

He said crews continue to work on the greens.

"They're healing," Jablonowski said. "It's still apparent they were damaged, but they're getting better."

Jablonowksi said the incident was unfortunate.

"It's a shame," he said. "I don't know why anyone would want to do something like that. I don't know what goes through people's minds."

They just hurt their neighbors when they do it," he added.

Police are still investigating the incident. Anyone with information should call the Basehor police at (913) 724-1370.
