Lady ‘Cats fall flat at Tonganoxie
After Basehor-Linwood's girls basketball team lost its third straight game Tuesday night, BLHS coach Mardy Robinson could not leave Tonganoxie fast enough.
The Lady 'Cats lost to Tonganoxie, 53-46, and after the game Robinson was visibly upset.
"Our defense was horrible in the first half," Robinson said. "The officials were not good. Our intensity did not match theirs. That was the difference in the game."
As upset as Robinson was after the game, the Bobcats were in the game until the final minute.
Tonganoxie never led by more than 10 points, and late in the game, a three-pointer by BLHS junior Alex Jeannin brought the Bobcats to within five, 49-44.
The turning point of the game was in the second quarter after Basehor-Linwood went on a 5-0 run to level the score at 21.
At that point, Tonganoxie opened up a gap that they would never relinquish; they went on a 13-4 run of their own to end the half.
Tonganoxie hit a buzzer-beating lay up at the end of the half to make the score 34-25.
While good news was minimal for the Bobcats, Basehor-Linwood received a boost in team depth.
After a short leave of absence, junior Katie Burchfield returned to the team and played crucial minutes for the Lady 'Cats.
Robinson did not comment on the benefits of Burchfield's return, but she had six points and two rebounds against Tonganoxie.
Senior Aubrey Bittel was the leading scorer for Basehor-Linwood with 16 points, and she added eight rebounds before she fouled out late in the game.
Senior Tiffany Bates had 10 points and eight rebounds.
Last Friday, the Lady 'Cats fell to Immaculata on the road, to drop to 6-6 overall and 4-3 in the Kaw Valley
The Bobcats will play again Friday, Feb. 7 at Mill Valley.
The girls will start approximately at 6 p.m.
