Fire inspections begin in Basehor businesses
Fire fighters with the Fairmount Township Fire Department have begun fire inspections for buildings housing retail and commercial businesses. The inspections are in conjunction with the city of Basehor.
In April, the Basehor City Council adopted the Uniform Fire Code, national fire and safety guidelines for buildings housing retail and commercial businesses. The inspections are for business buildings only; private residences are not included, said Mike Hooper, Basehor city codes administrator.
"The Fairmount Township Fire Department will be doing inspections on new and existing buildings," Hooper said. "Some people aren't aware this code has been adopted. We're hoping to get a lot cleared up and cleaned up.
"It's not our goal to penalize, just to make the city a safer place," he added.
The fire department is in charge of the inspections.
"Usually if there is a violation, they have 30 to 60 days to correct it," Hooper said. "If they don't it comes to my office."
The codes department is also urging businesses to renew their licenses this year. City businesses must renew their licenses on an annual basis.
There is a $10 fee for renewing business licenses.
