Several alumni return to BLHS for senior celebration
Tracy Hart was one of 10 Basehor-Linwood softball alumni to find time to return for the Bobcats' final game of the season.
Following the game, she joked and laughed with her former coach, Susan Mayberry who was in a good mood because her team had just come back from a 6-1 deficit to win, 7-6.
The night was special regardless, but the win put bigger smiles on Bobcat faces.
"I was very proud to see them come back and pull it out in the end," Hart said.
The doubleheader against Bonner Springs, Monday, May 12, was a softball team homecoming of sorts as players from the past helped the seniors celebrate their final home game.
Trina Ellifrits also participated in the celebration and was a teammate of Hart's. The event brought back good memories.
The fondest memory was when the team in 1998 won the regional tournament to go to state. That was Mayberry's first year as head coach.
"It's good to comeback and see my coach and former teammates," Ellifrits said. "It makes me realize how much I miss the sport.
"I love Mayberry," she added.
Mayberry loves the alumni, too.
"The alumni are special for me," Mayberry said. "They are all great people."
She said seeing former players brought back memories. She would like more to make it, but many of them are busy.
"To be honest, it's about timing," Mayberry said. "We had a great response, but people have finals or are in the work force. I'm pleased to see those come back who could, but we'll try to plan sooner next year to get more out here."
While it was a homecoming for alumni, the game was also a goodbye for seniors. Three seniors, Cristin Burnett, Abby Ross and Sarah Aldridge played in their final home game.
"Time flies so quickly as a coach," Mayberry said. "On the one hand, you never like to say goodbye, but they are closing a chapter in their lives, and I am excited for them.
"Cristin has dedicated her entire high school career to academics and sports," she said. "She has been a part of this team for four years, and I'd like to have some success to finish her career. She has had nothing but a positive approach and leadership.
"Sarah has accepted a tough role on our team," Mayberry said. "She wants to play and is working hard for us. She has only been with us for two years, and I'm thankful she got to be part of the team."
The Bobcats did their celebration in style. Balloons surrounded the fielded while each senior had her name on the out field wall. Between innings, a DJ belted a variety of music.
Between games, the Bobcats had a ceremony to honor the alumni and seniors. The alumni and seniors were introduced to the crowd.
For the second straight season Senior Night with the Basehor-Linwood High School softball program was a hit.
After several alumni turned out last year for the first annual Senior Night festivities, several more returned this year.
Some of the same faces returned, but there were some new ones, as well.
