Opinion: Go county!
I'm going to tell you right now, the people at the Basehor Athletic Association are reckless.
Reckless, I tell you, right down to their very core.
The not-for-profit organization (oh, the do-gooders!) only cares about providing quality baseball, softball, football and soccer games for children.
The 34-acre Field of Dreams complex it operates was built on the backs of volunteers (slave labor, right here in Basehor?) because the athletic association receives exactly zero funding from Basehor or Leavenworth County.
The Field of Dreams was paid for by fund-raising and private donations (what, are you guys too good for a loan?).
Frankly, I'm sick of it and so is the Leavenworth County Planning Commission. Thank the heavens, my government is coming to the rescue.
On Wednesday evening, the nine-member Planning Commission was scheduled to discuss removing the Field of Dreams planned unit development zoning, which allows them to operate as an athletic complex.
Why are they discussing removing the zoning? Because lights at the ball fields are on too early and/or too late. If the zoning is removed, the Field of Dreams will go back to being zoned as rural residential and won't be able to operate as a ball field.
It's about time. County government, I salute you.
Sometimes dedicated field workers have the audacity to start their day early by turning on the lights at 5 a.m. to prepare the fields. What, can't you guys (mostly high school students) find a real job? What's wrong with slinging hash or being the fry guy at McDonald's.
It's awfully un-American is what it is.
Sometimes those evil-doers at the athletic association even leave them on past 11 p.m. running the lights as late as 11:30 p.m.
Listen, I think I speak for everyone when I say I don't want to catch the glare of some freakin' lights while I'm trying to watch Conan O'Brien.
I for one, am tired of all this malicious behavior at the Field of Dreams; it's about time my county government took the time and energy necessary to put an end to this bleacher-born axis of evil.
I hate that the Field of Dreams promotes young athletes playing sports. I hate the fact that children of our community are off the couch, away from the potato chips and Playstations, only to be outside playing ball. You're not going pro, Johnny, so you might as well hang up the cleats.
We're a nation where kids are playing too much. We should be getting ready to send them to war. Bring back the draft!
I'll tell you what else I loathe: Basehor receiving recognition for providing a quality athletic complex with outstanding facilities and tournaments.
It's ridiculous that coaches from out-of-state teams praise the Field of Dreams, it's incredulous that the Field of Dreams brings praise to Leavenworth County and Basehor.
Bring it down with a wrecking ball, county. Bring it down and build something a lot more useful, something like a parking lot or better yet, a strip mall.
Now that's what we need, more Hardees restaurants or gas stations or a bank or, hold your breath and cross your fingers, a Starbucks.
Go county is what I say.
