BLHS dancers bound for New York
This Thanksgiving four Basehor-Linwood High School girls will have something a little more special to be thankful for.
Senior Alesia Self, sophomores Hannah Brown and Nicci Equels, and freshman Maggie Herbster will participate in Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. None of them have been to New York before.
"We've been counting down for like four months," Hannah said.
They qualified for the parade at the American Dance and Drill camp they attended this summer in Emporia. All four are members of the Basehor-Linwood dance team.
Three of their other teammates also qualified: junior Stacee Paulsen, junior Alex McCollum and senior Elisha King, but they chose not to go.
To qualify, dancers at the camp were nominated for the Macy's dance tryouts. Everyone receiving All-American or honorable mention during the tryouts -- about 30 at the camp -- qualified to participate in the parade. They will join dancers from all over the country to walk in the parade and perform a dance in Harold Square.
This is the fourth year Alesia Self has qualified but the first time she's going.
"I wanted to wait until my senior year," she said.
The trip costs about $1,400 per person, which does not include airfare, and each girl pays out of pocket. That pays for their room at the Hilton from Saturday, Nov. 22 to Friday, Nov. 28, their costumes, Macy's jackets and bags, six dance practices and transportation in New York. They'll also get to tour the Statue of Liberty, Ground Zero and NBC studios -- and, of course, they have one free day that they all say is set aside for shopping.
"We're all rooming together, and our moms are all rooming together," Nicci said.
The girls have received their costumes, coats and bags, as well as a tape of the dance they'll be doing.
"We've watched it, but we don't have it down yet," Alesia said.
"But we will," Maggie said.
The parade will be aired on NBC from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, Nov. 27.
