Basehor-Linwood students honored for writing
The Basehor Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 11499 recently conducted an essay contest for seventh- and eighth-grade students. Larry Booth and Marina Cooley, English teachers at Basehor-Linwood Middle School, assisted with the contest.
Students submitted essays written with a "What Service to Our Country Means to Me" theme. VFW members, member's wives and local residents comprised the judging panel, which spent two evenings grading the 114 essays submitted.
After reading and rereading, the 18 judges chose seven winning essays; another five essays were given honorable mention.
Eighth graders John King, Hanna Bates, Jonas Box, Chantal Williams, Anne Chipman, Cole DeRuse and Jessyka Coulter wrote the winning essays. Honorable mentions were: Kelsey Stahl, Hannah Auman, Ashlee Miller, Ally Coy and Hannah Rollwagen.
The winning students received a $100 savings bond. They will be guests at the VFW meeting Jan. 27. Their winning essays were forwarded on to the VFW District 1 competition.
