Edward E. Gates Sr.
Lawrence Services for Edward E. Gates Sr., 63, of Linwood, will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Lawrence Funeral Chapel. Cremation will follow.
Mr. Gates died Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004, at his home in rural Linwood.
He was born Feb. 1, 1941, in Leavenworth, the son of John and Mary (Wright) Gates. He worked at the Gould National Battery Factory in Leavenworth and at Berkel and Company of Bonner Springs until his retirement. He then owned and operated Gates Trucking in Linwood.
Mr. Gates was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Alaska.
He married Margaret Wriggley on Oct. 20, 1962, in Leavenworth. They later divorced.
He is survived by two sons, Edward E. "Gene" Gates Jr., Lansing, and David Gates, Leavenworth; one daughter, Patricia Brown, Leavenworth; five brothers, John Gates, North Kansas City, Mo., Lee Gates, DeSoto, Charles Gates, Killeen, Texas, Ted Gates, St. Ann, Mo., and Rick Keppler, Leavenworth; two sisters, Mary Wade, Lancaster, Ca., and Carolyn Scott, Killeen, Texas; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by an infant son, James Carl Gates, and one brother, Joe Gates.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. and after the service until 8 p.m. Wednesday.
The family suggests memorials to Toys for Tots, sent in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 1516, Lawrence.
