Ryun announces academy nominees

Three Lansing students have won nominations from U.S. Rep. Jim Ryun for appointments to the nation's military academies, Ryun's office has announce.

James Griffith has been nominated for a U.S. Air Force Academy appointment..

Nominated for a U.S. Military Academy appointment is Scott Schultz.

Joseph Sebes was nominated for a U.S. Merchant Marine Academy appointment.

Gaining nomination is the first step in the process; nominated students now must wait to see if they are accepted by the academies.

Hunters urged to prevent fires

The Kansas State Fire Marshal's office is seeking help from hunters to help prevent wildland fires.

The Fire Marshal's Office asks hunters to:

¢ Find out any safety restrictions in the area they plan to visit.

¢ Be aware of ejected cartridges or shells because they may ignite dry vegetation.

¢ Be cautious when discarding smoking materials.

¢ Restrict campfires to designated recreation sites or campgrounds. Open fires, campfires, stoves or charcoal grills should be used with extreme care and doused or fully extinguished. Never leave an open fire unattended.

¢ Limit use of motorized vehicles to established roads or trails.

¢ Keep a bucket, a shovel and a fire extinguisher in vehicles and at camps.

¢ Do not park vehicles over dry grass or brush.

Replays of the Lansing City Council meetings can be seen at the following times on Lansing Government Television (LGTV), Channel 2: 7 p.m. Monday; 10 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Tuesday; 5 p.m. Friday; 1 p.m. Saturday; and 7 p.m. Sunday.
