Sunflower preparing to offer ‘total telecommunications package’

February 5, 2004

Once an upgrade project is completed, Sunflower Broadband will have the capabilities to offer Basehor residents "a total telecommunications package," said Jim Day, Sunflower Broadband project manager.

Sunflower Broadband, a Lawrence-based company, has been the chief cable service provider in Basehor, Tonganoxie and nearby outlying areas for the past three years.

The company began improving its Basehor cable facilities in 2003. The enhancements will allow Sunflower Broadband to offer cable television, high-definition television, high-speed Internet service and telephone service to customers in the near future.

The upgrades include integrating fiber optics into the current cable system and updating some of the system's electronics. Television signals and communications services offered in Basehor are controlled and monitored from a central office in Lawrence.

Sunflower Broadband has divided Basehor into seven separate nodes, or areas, where upgrades are occurring.

Work has been completed at areas along Parallel Road and in the Iron Creek, Prairie Gardens and Prairie Lakes subdivisions in Basehor. Upgrades also have been finished inside developments just south of Basehor, at Glenwood Estates and Cedar Lakes.

Work in the remaining areas is progressing smoothly and the company will continue to work toward the city's older homes and neighborhoods as the project moves along.

While there is no date attached to the project's completion, Day said "it will probably happen faster than one might expect."

He added that the company places delivering a high-end service to its customers above finishing the job in a rush.

"There can be so many unforeseen circumstances," Day said. "Sometimes quality goes away in exchange for meeting a deadline. We want to make sure the quality is there first.

"We want to provide (expanded services) to Basehor," Day said. "We want their business. It takes a little time but we will finish this project."

Since Sunflower Broadband has offered services in Basehor prices have remained frozen. Prices for the new services will vary depending on which communication packages customers select.
