Familiar face named Basehor police corporal
The Basehor Police Department filled a newly created position by naming Jason Slaughter, a patrol officer in Basehor for the past three years, as corporal.
Slaughter, 30, began his tenure as corporal Monday, Jan. 19.
"It's an excellent choice," Sgt. Martin Cigich said. "He's earned it and he deserves it."
Slaughter will be the third in command at the police department, behind Cigich and police chief Vince Weston.
Under his new responsibilities, Slaughter will review reports, handle day-to-day logs and keep track of vehicle maintenance.
Slaughter came to the police department after serving with the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Department.
The new corporal said he was surprised to receive the nod as corporal but was pleased he could continue to serve the city he's grown fond of.
"I've been here long enough to know people on a first-name basis," he said. "It's kind of nice when someone calls into the police department and asks for me because I've talked to them before. I think I've developed a rapport with the community."
Slaughter said one of his first tasks as corporal would be to overhaul the squad room to manage the available space better.
