Sentinel joins trio to form new group

January 29, 2004

Beginning next week, The Basehor Sentinel will operate as part of a regional newspaper division, Media West Communications.

Along with the Sentinel, the newspapers in the group are The Shawnee Dispatch, the Bonner Springs Chieftain and the De Soto Explorer.

The four papers in the new group can be reached online through a new Internet portal, www.newsmwc.com.

The portal also will provide links to other newspapers operated by the World Company, which is headquartered in Lawrence. Those papers are the Lawrence Journal-World, the Eudora News, the Baldwin City Signal and the Tonganoxie Mirror.

Dolph C. Simons III, president of the newspapers division of the World Company, which operates the Media West group, said the group was established to give the four papers a stronger regional presence.

"All four papers have strong community identities and will continue to focus on local news, but they also work together to reach a broader regional audience that is important for advertisers," Simons said.

Together, the four papers will have a circulation of nearly 30,000.

The creation of the operating group comes at the same time that the paper serving western Shawnee, the Shawnee West Dispatch, is renamed and refocused. The paper will become The Shawnee Dispatch and begin covering the entire Shawnee community.

Despite the changes, the existing Web sites for each newspaper and e-mail addresses (www.basehorinfo.com or editor@basehorinfo.com) will remain active.
