Preliminary talks continue
Talks between the city of Basehor and representatives of the Basehor Athletic Association have been preliminary at this point with both sides planning to speak more seriously next week.
In February, City Council president Julian Espinoza asked and received permission from the City Council to explore the feasibility of partnering the city and the athletic association's Field of Dreams complex.
This week, Espinoza said talks have been preliminary thus far with both sides considering "what the long-term effects would be. Espinoza isn't ruling out a deal between the two sides, but said an agreement probably wouldn't occur anytime soon.
"I'd say it wouldn't be anything that would change things for this summer," he said, referring to this season's recreational youth baseball and softball leagues.
The Basehor Athletic Association is a volunteer organization responsible for coordinating sports activities at the Field of Dreams complex, located northeast of Basehor on Fairmount Road.
The Field of Dreams is a 34-acre facility that includes seven softball/baseball fields and four football fields. It hosts recreational and competitive tournaments throughout the summer.
Since its inception, the athletic association and its complex have received no funding from either county or city municipalities, making it one of the few sports centers in the area that receives no public funding.
Espinoza said the city's purpose in researching an alignment between the two is simply to help the athletic association provide a better product to Basehor residents.
Any kind of partnership between the sides, if one is agreed upon, probably wouldn't begin until next year, Espinoza said.
