3rd Basehor Council member won’t run again
On the heels of a recent announcement that two high ranking Basehor City Council members wouldn't seek re-election this spring, a third councilman said this week he also will not vie for an additional term.
City Council member Keith Sifford told The Sentinel he's content to finish the remaining months of his term and then step aside so he can spend more time with his family.
"I am going to fulfill my obligation of course -- but, I want to pursue other interests," Sifford said.
"I want to watch my grandson play basketball, and do things like that."
Sifford, who was appointed to the council in 2002 due to a
vacancy, joins Basehor mayor Joseph Scherer and City Council president Julian Espinoza as present council members who will not seek additional terms.
Espinoza is the senior member, having served for the last four years; Scherer was elected as a council member in 2001, but was appointed mayor a year later after then-mayor Bill Hooker resigned.
According to the Leavenworth County Clerk's Office, only one person has filed the necessary paperwork for the April 2005 election in Basehor.
Chris Garcia, a former Basehor City Council president and candidate in the 2001 mayoral election, has filed with the clerk's office for next year's mayors race.
