Lansing American Legion Post 411 held its monthly meeting on April 11 and took care of some ongoing business.
New officers were elected for the next year, including Commander Marty Morgan, Vice Commander George Grimm, Adjutant A.C. Byrd, Chaplain Larry Bryan and Historian June Foley. Members elected to the Executive Committee were Ralph Beckwith, Frank Benedict and June Foley. The newly elected officers will assume their positions at the May meeting and will serve through April 2006.
The post is in the process of selecting a name. The membership has been asked to vote on a choice of three names; the name selection will be made at the May meeting. The names being considered are: Thomas R. Young American Legion Post, Alfred W. Bane American Legion Post, and Lansing Memorial American Legion Post. The third option would name the post after the city of Lansing rather than a deceased veteran.
The Post has agreed to assist the Lansing VFW Post in raising money for the Lansing Veterans Memorial to be built in Lansing. Members will purchase engraved bricks and help in the sale to other veterans or families of veterans who want to memorialize a veteran.
The post will sponsor two American Legion Baseball teams from Lansing this year, the Cavalry and the Reds. The public is invited to come to the games and cheer our teams to victory.
The post recently received a certificate of achievement from the American Legion National Headquarters for a fifth consecutive year in achieving an all-time high in membership.
Post Adjutant A. C. Byrd has been elected as commander of the Kansas American Legion First District for 2005-06. Other local Legionnaires holding district officer positions are District Adjutant Dave Thomas from Leavenworth Post 23 and LaMont Lane, executive committee second year, from Leavenworth Post 94.
Monthly post meetings are at 6:30 p.m. on the second Monday of each month at the Lansing Activities Center, 108 S. Second St. All area veterans are invited to attend. Any current American Legion member wishing to transfer membership to the Lansing Post should contact A.C. Byrd at 727-1472.
