Sister in custody after family fight

April 28, 2005

A 16-year-old Lansing girl was taken into custody Sunday for cutting her brother in the hand after a teasing incident spiraled out of control, police say.

Police responded to an apartment in the 300 block of Frances Lane about 8:40 p.m. Sunday to a reported fight between a 17-year-old boy and his sister.

Chief Steve Wayman said Monday that when police arrived, they found the boy had a cut on the inside of his hand.

When police went to the girl's locked bedroom to talk to her, they discovered she had left the apartment by climbing through a window. Officers found her outside a short time later.

Wayman said the girl was taken to the Juvenile Detention Center on charges of aggravated battery, aggravated assault and obstruction of justice.

"They had been teasing each other," Wayman said, in explaining how the incident began. "The sister got mad and threw something at the brother. He yelled at her, and she went into the kitchen and got a knife."

Wayman said the girl began chasing the boy. In a struggle that ensued, the brother tried to get the knife away from the girl, and that's when he was cut.

The cut, Wayman said, was not life-threatening.
