Cavalry end summer with win against Blue Sox

Blakley, Coleman, Hansen end Lansing careers on solid note

August 3, 2005

— The Lansing Cavalry had just nine players at their disposal for their game against the Leavenworth Blue Sox on Tuesday night at Sportsfield, but those nine put on a dazzling display of baseball efficiency.

Cody Mohan threw just 55 pitches and allowed one hit through the first five innings. Mike Amaral and Conn Blakley provided solid relief. All nine players had at least one hit apiece. Catcher Lonnie Hansen threw out a runner at second in the ninth inning.

In many ways it was perfect baseball, and the final score indicated as much.

Cavalry 10, Blue Sox 4.

Lansing's bats clicked from the very beginning of the game. They loaded the bases in the top of the first inning as Hansen led off with a single, Mike Bayless reached base on an error and Mohan singled. The Cavalry were unable to score a run, but that didn't last long. They stranded two more runners in the second inning and then used four hits and two walks in the third inning to score four runs.

The lead grew to 6-0 in the fourth inning as Johnny Stratton plated a run on a ground out and then Kyle Hutchison ripped a run-scoring single up the middle.

Josh Coleman earned a leadoff walk in the fifth, stole second and then came around to score on Mohan's base hit. The lead increased to 9-0 in the sixth as Jeff Terrill and Stratton both singled and later scored on Mike Amaral's double off the fence in left field.

With the game in hand, the Cavalry lost focus a bit in the bottom of the seventh. Three errors and two hits led to four runs scoring - only one of them earned - but the Blue Sox didn't gain much momentum from the brief rally. Instead, the Cavalry bounced back and scored another run in the eighth. Terrill led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch. He stole second and then scored on an error.

The Cavalry closed the game out in style as they retired the side in the bottom of the ninth. Blakley struck out the first batter. The second singled but then was thrown out at second by Hansen. Blakley struck out the third batter to seal the victory.
