Police: drunken driver has prior record

December 1, 2005

A case against a Tonganoxie man who allegedly led Basehor police on a high-speed chase last month soon will move to Leavenworth County District Court.

Robert Jiles, 61, currently faces numerous charges in Basehor Municipal Court.

Charges filed against him include driving under the influence, speeding, fleeing and eluding police, reckless driving, driving on a suspended license, illegal tags, running stop lights, no seatbelt, transporting an open container and unsafe passing.

He is scheduled to appear in municipal court at 1 p.m. Dec. 13.

However, Basehor police said it's questionable whether that court date will be kept because, based on Jiles' previous driving record, prosecution against him will most likely be moved to district court.

Jiles has a prior traffic infraction record that includes "more than one DUI and at least five traffic infractions," according to Basehor police department detective Lloyd Martley.

Martley said the county attorney's office will review the case and make the decision whether to move the case to the county's jurisdiction.

"We don't make the presumption," he said, "but it will probably get kicked up to district court because the DUI side of it will make it a felony itself."

As of Tuesday afternoon, the Leavenworth County attorney's office had no record of charges filed against Jiles.

Jiles was arrested Nov. 16 at Kansas Highway 7 and U.S. Highway 24-40.

He was initially stopped at 151st Street and Leavenworth Road for allegedly driving 44 mph in a 30 mph zone.

Shortly after he was pulled over, Jiles fled.

He headed east on Leavenworth Road and turned south onto K-7, running a stop light.

He ran another red light at K-7 and Parallel and turned onto the westbound 24-40 ramp when his engine blew up, police said.

The chase lasted only a few minutes, but police said speeds topped 100 mph.

At one point, police officers said, Jiles threw a bottle out the window.
