Board, teacher settle dispute

February 3, 2005

The Lansing School Board on Tuesday agreed to settle a dispute with Gregory Rawlings, re-scinding the teacher's firing and allowing him to resign later this year.

The board had taken the action in November against Rawlings, an eighth-grade science teacher with the district since 1986, for what it called inappropriate interactions with female students, violation of the district's sexual harassment policy, insubordination and a long-standing and continuing pattern of demeaning students in class.

Rawlings appealed the dismissal in a hearing before the board.

The agreement places Rawlings on administrative leave for the remainder of this school year. Randal Bagby, superintendent, said that meant Rawlings would be paid through the end of his contract year, the end of June.

Rawlings originally was suspended with pay Oct. 20.
