Martha Ann Lunsford


A memorial service for Martha Ann "Marty" Lunsford, 53, Leavenworth, was Monday at Leavenworth National Cemetery.

She was born in Forsyth County, N.C., the daughter of Samuel Merlin and Helen (Rash) Lunsford.

Ms. Lunsford graduated in 1969 from West Forsyth High School, where she was known for her fun-loving spirit and musical talents on percussion instruments.

After graduation, she served more than nine years as a nurse with the U.S. Army. She cared for wounded soldiers in the burn unit during the Vietnam War. She also helped deliver babies in the obstetrics unit.

She earned two Army Commendation Awards during her service; one was for her outstanding clinic; the other for saving the life of a fellow soldier.

After her discharge, she was employed at Munson Army Hospital at Fort Leavenworth and later at Dwight D. Eisenhower Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Leavenworth.

She was a member of St. Martin's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lansing.

Ms. Lunsford enjoyed life and was surrounded by friends and pets. She was a football fan and enjoyed fishing and pizza.

For the past 14 years, she had battled Huntington's Disease.

Survivors include her mother, Lewisville, N.C.; a brother, Samuel Gray; two nephews, Joel and Bryan Lunsford, Winston-Salem, N.C.; a niece, Anna Vasili, Lewisville, N.C.; and her longtime friend and companion Darlene Hurley.

The family suggests memorials for research only to Huntington's Disease Society, 158 W. 29th St., Seventh Floor, New York, N.Y. 10001-5300.

Davis Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth, is in charge of arrangements.
