Chamber delays candidate forum
Due to the recent withdrawals of two Basehor City Council candidates, a Basehor Chamber of Commerce-sponsored candidate forum scheduled for next week has been postponed until mid-March.
Chamber of Commerce president Debbie Breuer said the forum has a tentative date of Wednesday, March 16. The time, 7 p.m., and place, inside the community room at Community National Bank in Basehor, remain the same, Breuer said.
An exact date for the forum will be announced next week, Breuer said.
The forum was scheduled for Feb. 22, a week before the March 1 primary election, so voters could have an opportunity to hear the platforms of the five candidates running for the only race requiring a primary, the bid for two City Council seats.
However, after candidates Bob Moore and James Washington (see related story, this page) removed themselves from consideration, chamber officials decided to postpone the February forum and reschedule it for a more timely March date, Breuer said.
The general election is Tuesday, April 5.
Barring any more withdrawals or write-in candidacies, Basehor voters will choose from incumbent City Council member Keith Sifford and Basehor residents Terry Thomas and David Povilonis.
Also scheduled to appear at the forum are mayoral candidates Chris Garcia and Joseph Nick.
The forum will also provide a sounding board for the four candidates seeking a position on the Basehor-Linwood School Board: Randy Cunningham, Position 4; incumbent school board member Patrick Jeannin, Position 5; and Paul Smith and Gary Johnson, Linwood residents seeking Position 6.
