Tractor safety course offered

February 24, 2005

The annual hazardous occupation training, or tractor safety course, will be from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. March 31 and from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. April 16 at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds in Tonganoxie.

The Leavenworth, Douglas and Johnson County extension services cooperate to sponsor the training.

This training is required by law for those 14 and 15 years of age who will be operating a tractor on a farm owned by anyone other than their parent or legal guardian. Others, including inexperienced youths and adults who plan to work for farmers are encouraged to attend the training.

Farmers who intend to hire 14- and 15-year-old youths should make sure they have the youths take the course.

The cost for the training is $10, which pays for the text/workbook and refreshments. Registration should be made at the Douglas, Johnson, or Leavenworth County extension offices by March 28 to pick up text/workbooks so the first two chapters can be read prior to the first class.
