Modular home catches fire in transit
Firefighters from Sherman and Fairmount Townships battled a stubborn, smoky fire inside a modular home that was being transported along Highway 24/40 Friday morning.
Danita Napolis, one of the drivers in the convoy accompanying the home, said she noticed smoke coming from the second trailer shortly before 11 a.m. She said she radioed one of the other drivers about the same time the driver of the burning trailer pulled over onto the shoulder of the road. Napolis is a driver for Creek National, the hauling company hired to transport the home.
The convoy was delivering a two-section modular home from Fuqua Homes, Booneville, Mo., to Manhattan, Kan., when the fire occurred.
The trailer burned on the side of the highway, closing a section of westbound State Avenue. No one was injured. The cause of the fire was undetermined.
