Cavalry pound Garnett
Mohan’s grand slam, Blakley’s homer provide the biggest fireworks in twinbill sweep
Garnett The Lansing Cavalry picked up a pair of road victories in explosive fashion on Saturday afternoon.
Cody Mohan smashed a grand slam and Conn Blakley had a solo homer during Lansing's 19-3 and 12-2 victories at Garnett in a twinbill that turned into batting practice for the hot-hitting Cavalry.
"We definitely played better," Cavalry coach Jake Hanson said of the victories. "We pitched well and we played pretty good defense. We made two errors in 12 innings. The hitting was still there, too."
Jeff Terrill was solid on the mound in game one as he threw five strong innings with one earned run. When Conn Blakley came on in relief, the Cavalry already had the game well in control. Numerous players had multiple hits in the game, including Terrill who had three. For good measure, however, Mohan blasted his grand slam in the fifth inning to put the exclamation point on the victory.
Matt Mowery started on the mound in game two and threw four innings before giving way to Kyle Hutchison. By then, Lansing already was in control again because of strong hitting. Blakley had three hits in game two, including his solo homer.
The Cavalry (16-13) play at 7 p.m. Monday night at Lansing High School in a single game against the Leavenworth Blue Sox before opening Zone Tournament play at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Paola against Blue Valley West.
