Heat, rain can’t halt ‘Classic’
Despite 100-degree temperatures Monday and thunderstorms Tuesday, nothing stopped 76 women from packing the golf course at Leavenworth Country Club for the Jail-Birdie Classic Golf Tournament.
There were so many players, the tournament had to be divided into three flights after the first day to allow for multiple winners.
The top three teams in each division won prizes.
Linda Larison, Linda Swain, Linda Randall and Kim Wright teamed to win first place in the American Robin flight. Second place went to Brenda Frese, Melba Gerber, Debbie Coleman and Wanda Strange. Third place was won by the team of Linda Geppert, Susie O'Dell, Barb Jennings and Pat Odneal.
The Blue Bird flight was won by Patty Saragusa, Pat Sambol, Mary Kolich and Sandy Pavin. Second place went to the team of Marguerite Hilscher, Judy Zell, B.J. Ragland and Connie Sheppard. The third-place team was composed of Chris Baird, Joni Caldwell, Susie Young and Sheila Gholkir.
The final flight was the Cardinal flight. It was won by Theresa Thomas, Pam Greene, Margie Hohenshell and Nadine Mason. Second place was won by Sharon Seymour, Bobbi Drysdale, Brenda Hubbs and Carol Sorowler. Third place in the flight went to the team of Becki Carpenter, Carolyn Chastain, Linda Dixon and Jane Englehart.
In addition to the flight competitions, players competed for prizes on each hole, as well as for prizes in a separate contest on the putting green.
