Riptides swim tough against Lake Quivira
Leavenworth It's been years since the Leavenworth Riptides swim club has come close to beating Lake Quivira in a dual, but on Wednesday they gave Lake Quivira all it could handle at Riverfront Community Center.
The Riptides, an eight-week swimming club, took the year-round swimmers from Lake Quivira to the wire before falling 297-254.
The Riptides had their share of event winners on Wednesday. Shyann Winkler, Lacie Falk, Nikki Gee and Lauren Jaqua won the girls' 12-and-under freestyle relay in 2:25.62. Carly Stowe, Abbey Lozenski, Lauryn Denney and Ravyn Teeters won the girls' freestyle relay in the 14-and-under division in 2:16.73.
In the individual freestyle, Mekayla Depaulis, Connor Johnson, Mary Thorne, Alex Johnson, Randy Harrison, Katie Cornelius and Jaqua were champions of their respective age divisions.
Johnson, Thorne, Harrison, Teeters and Cornelius also added championships in the butterfly.
In the backstroke, Daniel Christie, Haven Stutz, Johnson and Maryclaire Peterson placed first in their age group competitions. Johnson won again in the breaststroke in the boys' eight-and-under division. Other breaststroke winners were Mitchell Denney, Lauryn Denney, Harrison and Cornelius.
Johnson completed his five-event individual sweep when he won the individual medley in 1:33.42, just ahead of teammate David Christie.
Other individual medley winners were Alex Johnson, Harrison and Cornelius.
Johnson added one final title when he, Alex Hamlet, Jack Reilly and Ryan Jaqua teamed to win the medley relay in 1:59.
Nick Andring, Alex Johnson, Mitchell Denney and Tyler Heintzelman won the medley relay in the 12-and-under division. Lauren Jaqua, Kristen Gould, Gee and Winkler won the girls' title in the same division.

The Riptides next compete on June 22 against the Fun Valley Swim Club at the Bonner Springs YMCA. The meet will begin at 8 a.m.
