May 5, 2005

A hitchhiker from Maryland faces charges that he stole a Lansing business owner's delivery van.

Harold Poe, owner of Caraway Printing, 204 N. Main St., reported his company's delivery van stolen at 2:55 p.m. April 27 from the parking lot outside his business.

The van, a 2003 Windstar, was recovered the following day on Interstate 70 in Saline County. Authorities had pulled over the van, which was being driven by a 37-year-old Maryland man in custody for the theft.

A witness, Lansing Current reporter Jesse Truesdale, identified the suspect as a hitchhiker he had picked up on the afternoon of April 27 and dropped off in the Caraway Printing parking lot. The Current and Caraway share offices in the building at 204 N. Main St. Truesdale identified the suspect from a photo a Lansing detective showed to him.

The suspect, Gregory Yeaney, of Baltimore, has been charged in Leavenworth County District Court with felony theft and theft. He also faces charges of possession of stolen property in Saline County, Lansing Police Chief Steve Wayman said.
