Rainbow Classic tourney shines again at LCC
The Leavenworth Country Club Ladies' Rainbow Classic golf tournament has been going on for more than 30 years, but few tournaments in the past have been as successful as the one May 18.
The weather was comfortable, the course was in good shape and there were lots of participants, said Marguerite Hilscher, the tournament chairwoman.
"It was a huge success," Hilscher said. "The people from out of town came up and said it was really nice. They thought it was tremendous, and everyone said it was the most well-organized event. There was a lot of hard work put in by our local girls, so it was very successful."
Eighty women representing 16 golf clubs participated in the tournament. Among them was Leavenworth Country Club member Patti Saragusa, who was on the first-place team with Sandi Paulin of Paradise Point, Mary Kolich of Painted Hills and Pat Sambo of Alvamar Country Club.
Sandy Pepper and Kim Havens of Fort Leavenworth were on the second-place team. Fort Leavenworth golfer Judy Zell and LCC members BJ Ragland and Hilscher were on the team that placed fourth.
Saragusa said she enjoyed the tournament's format, which paired golfers with players from other clubs.
"My favorite part of it is having a day of golf and meeting other ladies that share the same interest," she said. "They don't necessarily have to belong to a club (to play), so you can meet different people that are from different areas. It's not just open to club people. It's open to anybody that wants to play in it."
Saragusa said everybody who participated was awarded a prize. She said that allowed everyone to relax and have fun.
"Everybody was a winner, really," she said. "Everybody won something, so that was nice. It's not just all about the ones that came in first, second and third. Everybody won something."
The Rainbow Classic isn't the only ladies' tournament at Leavenworth Country Club this year. The annual women's member-guest tournament - the fourth annual Jail Birdie Classic - will take place July 24-26. Non-members are allowed to participate, too. There will be a practice round on the 24th, followed by a two-day tournament. Anyone interested in playing should call the Leavenworth Country Club Pro Shop at 351-6626.
