New golf tourney on tap
Tri-City challenge to test local golfers
The first Tri-City Golf Championship will take place June 4-5 at Trails West Golf Course at Fort Leavenworth.
The tournament will pit golfers from Lansing, Leavenworth and Fort Leavenworth in a 36-hole battle to determine the top golfer in the tri-city area.
"This is the first time we've ever done it, so we're hoping it's a hit," said Mark Germonprez, Trails West manager. "We're going to try to grow it from here to where maybe next year it'll be at two or three of the city courses."
Germonprez said he wanted to have an annual local tournament because he didn't think there was enough being done to promote the game of golf in the area. He said a tri-city championship could help generate more interest in the game.
"We don't do enough to grow the game in this area," he said.
The tournament is open to golfers of all ages as long as they live or work in Lansing, Leavenworth or Fort Leavenworth or are members of one of the cities' golf courses. Germonprez said a traveling trophy would be created and would display the name of the winner each year. That trophy would be displayed at the winner's home course for the year.
"They'll get the chance to put their name on the trophy first," Germonprez said.
The tournament will include several divisions within which golfers can compete, including men's, women's, senior men's and senior women's categories, and possibly men's and women's Super Seniors category for those ages 60-69. A Master's division also might be created for golfers age 70 and older.
Registration materials are available at all area golf courses. There will be a $75 entry fee, which includes green fees, lunch, drink tickets and various prizes. The deadline to register is June 2. For more information, call Trails West at 651-7176.
