City holiday fund seeks nominations

November 17, 2005

Today is the deadline for nominations for families needing assistance through the annual Mayor's Christmas Tree Fund Drive.

The fund is a joint project of the city of Lansing and Lansing PRIDE.

Each year, the event has benefited up to 20 families in the Lansing community with boxes of food, toys, clothes and gift certificates for additional groceries.

Fund sponsors encourage private individuals, businesses and civic organizations to participate in the drive by donating cash or groceries, which can be left at City Hall, 800 First Terrace.

In addition to the Mayor's Christmas Tree Fund, two other holiday drives are under way in Lansing.

An Angel Tree will be erected in the lobby of City Hall. On it will be tags with wishes from children. Participants are asked to pick a tag off the tree, purchase the gift and return it to City Hall.

Lansing Community Library, 108 S. Second St., is sponsoring "Deck the Halls with Books" for children. Participants can pick up a tag, purchase a book for the appropriate age and gender and return the book to the library.

Deadline for donations in all three of the programs is Monday, Dec. 12.

Once the deadline passes, city staffers and members of Lansing PRIDE, Kiwanis and Lions clubs will distribute the donated items.

Anyone with questions about the programs can call the Administration Department at City Hall, 727-3233.
