Authorities seek warrant
Basehor police officers are working with the Leavenworth County attorney's office to acquire a felony warrant for a juvenile who is accused of stealing a car from a Basehor business.
The suspect, a 15-year-old boy, is believed to have fled his Kansas City, Mo., residence for Arizona. The suspect, who was working at a construction job in Basehor, is accused of stealing a delivery vehicle from Simple Simon's Pizza on Aug. 17.
Witnesses identified the juvenile, police said.
"The case is solved," said Terry Horner, Basehor police chief. "These are difficult situations -- when you ask for a felony warrant for a juvenile, you have to handle it with kid gloves."
During the investigation, officers learned the suspect had been fired from his job and later told co-workers he planned to steal a car. The suspect had been working at a construction site in Basehor, south of the highway, a short jaunt from Simple Simon's.
Investigators have not yet found the vehicle.
"We hope we can we recover the car, and obviously this young man needs to answer to this crime," Horner said.
