Police arrest suspect in 7-Eleven armed robbery
Lansing Police have detained a suspect in the city's first armed robbery of the year, a holdup of a convenience store on Sunday.
Police Chief Steve Wayman said Lansing Police picked up a 20-year-old Lansing woman about 1 p.m. Wednesday at her workplace, a Leavenworth business.
The woman was arrested on a previous Lansing Municipal Court warrant, Wayman said, but information developed by police led them to believe she was involved in the robbery at 7-Eleven, 501 N. Main St.
About 5:10 a.m. Sunday, a Caucasian female wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt, blue bandana and a white scarf covering her face came into the store and demanded money from the 58-year-old clerk who was on duty.
The clerk told police the woman had what appeared to be a handgun in a pocket of the sweatshirt, though it was not shown during the robbery.
The clerk handed over money from the register totaling less than $40, and the robber left on foot. The clerk was not harmed.
Wayman said officers from the Leavenworth County Sheriff's Department and Leavenworth Police Department assisted in trying to locate the suspect, to no avail at the time.
After the suspect was taken into custody Wednesday, she was taken to Leavenworth County Jail, where she was booked on the municipal warrant and underwent questioning about the robbery, Wayman said.
Asked whether the woman in custody was the robber, Wayman said, "We feel pretty good about it."
Until Sunday, the last armed burglary in the city took place Dec. 21, 2004, at Wood Oil Co., 109 4-H Road.
The suspect in that case, a 26-year-old Kansas City, Kan., man, is in Leavenworth County Jail awaiting trial Oct. 3 on aggravated robbery and rape charges.
