Accidents claim two lives
Two Leavenworth County men, including one from Tonganoxie, were killed last weekend in motorcycle accidents.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Donald E. Casteel II, 37, died Sunday in a motorcycle accident on Kansas Highway 16, about a mile west of Tonganoxie.
Casteel was traveling west on Kansas Highway 16 when he apparently lost control of his motorcycle, which struck two road signs, the patrol said. The accident occurred at Sandusky Road.
The highway patrol said the accident occurred before 9 a.m., but the exact time of the crash is not clear.
Police dispatcher Mike Vestal said a Tonganoxie police officer discovered Casteel's body about 7:30 a.m. Sunday. Casteel was not wearing a helmet, highway patrol reports said.
In another accident, Richard Seber, 41, Leavenworth, was traveling east on U.S. Highway 24-40 just south of Tonganoxie about 5:50 p.m. Saturday when he lost control of his motorcycle, which hit a ditch. The accident occurred at the intersection of Leavenworth County Road 1.
Seber, who was not wearing a helmet, was taken by Leavenworth County Emergency Medical Service to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, sheriff's reports said. He later was flown by air ambulance to the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kan., where he died about 4:30 a.m. Sunday, sheriff's officers said.
