LHS softball seniors to be honored today
The Lansing High softball team will play host to a doubleheader with Bishop Ward at 4:30 p.m. today at Lansing City Park.
In keeping with the annual Senior Night festivities, LHS seniors Kasey Denney, Nicole Holland, Jessica Stark, Dana Sanders and Nichole Twitchel will be recognized.
Lansing swept Ward last year with 5-0 and 13-4 victories. LHS owns a 7-3 record this season and 3-1 mark in Kaw Valley League action.
Lansing was supposed to play Basehor-Linwood on Tuesday, but the games were rained out at the last minute. That doubleheader has been rescheduled for 4:30 p.m. May 10 at Basehor Field of Dreams.
Although Lansing's games Tuesday were rained out, it swept a doubleheader Thursday at Perry-Lecompton. LHS won a nine-inning thriller in game one, 2-1, and cruised to a 7-2 victory in the nightcap.
Lansing struggled at the plate throughout game one and mustered just three hits. Lang was dominant, though, and that made all the difference. Perry plated its only run in the bottom of the first inning when the leadoff batter reached on an error and later scored. After that, Lang took over and cruised the rest of the way. She tossed a two-hitter with 17 strikeouts.
Sanders smashed a second-inning double and eventually tied the game. A ninth-inning walk by Twitchel led to the game-winning run.
In game two, Sanders took the mound and struck out eight. Perry benefited from two errors, a triple and a single to take an early 2-0 lead, but LHS settled down after that and scored one run in the third inning, another in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the seventh.
