Jogger struck in accident
A Lansing teenager was transferred to a Kansas City-area hospital after being struck by a sport utility vehicle on Christmas Day, authorities said.
Patrick T. Dolan, 18, was jogging east on West Mary Street about 7:15 a.m. Monday, Dec. 25, when he ran in front of a Ford Escape at Main Street and was struck, the Kansas Highway Patrol reported.
Lansing Police Chief Steve Wayman said the Escape, driven by Kimberly S. Calhoun, 42, Shawnee, was southbound on Main Street and swerved to try to avoid striking Dolan.
"It's probably better that she swerved and he hit the side of the car rather than her not swerving and he be hit by the front of the car," Wayman said.
Dolan initially was transported to St. John Hospital in Leavenworth, but he was transferred via air ambulance to a Kansas City-area hospital with a broken leg and a concussion, Wayman said.
"I've been told his injuries aren't life-threatening," Wayman said, "but are very serious."
Wayman said a witness not involved in the accident reported the Escape was going through the intersection on a green light when the accident occurred.
