Accident causes power outage
An accident Sunday afternoon in Basehor knocked out electric power to most of the city, police said.
Police Detective Lloyd Martley said Harry Hiatt, 80, Tonganoxie, was driving an F-350 pickup truck south on 155th Street in Basehor about 1 p.m. Sunday.
Hiatt told police he swerved to avoid hitting a dog and his steering wheel locked and he lost power to his brakes.
Hiatt's truck hit a power pole, which snapped.
"The transformer blew, and it knocked out power to the whole city," Martley said.
Electric company workers were able to restore power to most of the city with an hour of the accident, Martley said, but an area near the accident scene was without power for several hours.
The accident site was at First Baptist Church, which is in the 1400 block of North 155th Street.
Hiatt was not injured in the accident.
